The Fall Garden

FALL PLANTING
SOME PERENNIAL PLANTS TO BEAUTIFY THE FALL GARDEN

ASTERS ARE BRIGHTLY COLORED FALL BLOOMING PERENNIALS.
FEEDING THE PLANTS WHEN PLANTING IN FALL AND AGAIN IN THE SPRING OF NEXT YEAR WILL PROMOTE HEALTHY GROWTH. PINCHING THE PLANTS DURING THE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER WILL KEEP THE PLANTS FULL AND STURDY.

MUMS (CHRYSANTHEMUMS)

PLANTED IN THE FALL IN CONTAINERS OR THE PERENNIAL FLOWER BED WILL BRIGHTEN UP ANY FALL GARDEN. THE TRICK TO GETTING MUMS TO SURVIVE THE WINTER AFTER FALL PLANTING IS TO ASSURE THE PLANTS ARE WATERED REGULARLY. THIS ALLOWS THE ROOTS TO GROW AND HELPS WITH WINTER SURVIVAL. MUMS ARE HEAVY FEEDERS SO FERTILIZE THE PLANTS NOW AND SEVERAL TIMES NEXT SPRING AND PINCH THE PLANTS DURING SPRING GROWTH TO PROMOTE THICK FULL FLOWERING PLANTS.

MONTAUK DAISY

A GOOD LATE BLOOMING FALL PERENNIAL HAVE WHITE DAISY FLOWERS WITH YELLOW CENTERS. PLANTS ARE VERY HARDY AND CAN GROW IN A SANDY SOIL SUCH AS Beach ENVIRONMENTS. PRUNING IN SPRING IS RECOMMENDED OR THE PLANTS WILL TEND TO GROW TOO TALL AND BE LEGGY.

SEDUM AUTUMN JOY

THIS PERENNIAL IS A NICE ADDITION TO THE PERENNIAL GARDEN. SEDUMS WILL TOLERATE DROUGHT CONDITIONS AND FULL HOT SUN. THE PLANTS HAVE INTERESTING FOLIAGE IN SPRING AND SUMMER AND ALTHOUGH THEY DON’T SHOW THE FLOWER COLOR UNTIL LATE SUMMER THEY FORM THE FLOWER BUDS EARLY IN THE SUMMER AND CONTINUE TO GROW ADDING STRUCTURE TO THE FLOWER BED.

ADD SOME PANSY PLANTS TO CONTAINERS AND FLOWER BEDS TO ADD A BRIGHT ASSORTMENT OF COLORS. THE PANSY AND VIOLA PLANTS LIKE THE COLD FALL WEATHER AND CAN BLOOM UP TILL CHRISTMAS. THEY WILL USUALLY SURVIVE THE WINTER AND RE-BLOOM THE FOLLOWING SPRING.
